Nagpur: The southwest monsoon is unlikely to arrive in Nagpur on June 15 — its normal onset date — with weather conditions indicating a slower advance across Central India and Vidarbha this year. On Sunday, Nagpur recorded isolated light rains.
IMD Forecast Highlights Gradual Monsoon Progress
As per the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) latest southwest monsoon outlook and extended-range forecast, monsoon progress over Maharashtra remains gradual, and no definitive onset date has yet been indicated for Nagpur or the wider Vidarbha region. Vidarbha may continue to receive relief from heat as forecasts indicate isolated to scattered rainfall across the region till June 20, driven largely by local weather systems and pre-monsoon conditions rather than organised monsoon circulation. The forecast suggests rainfall distribution may remain uneven, with short spells of showers and thunderstorms across districts instead of widespread monsoon rain.
Impact on Agriculture and Sowing Activities
The delayed advance could also keep sowing activity under watch in many parts of Central India, where farmers await sustained rainfall before beginning their large-scale agricultural operations. This uncertainty may affect crop planning and require adjustments in farming schedules.
