NCC Cadets and Alumni Unite for Major Ganga Cleanliness Drive in Varanasi
In a significant environmental initiative, the 7 UP Naval unit of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) based at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) organized a comprehensive cleanliness drive at the historic Assi Ghat in Varanasi on Tuesday. This event was a key part of an ongoing Environmental Awareness Campaign, drawing enthusiastic participation from both current NCC cadets and their alumni, who joined forces to tackle pollution along the sacred Ganga River.
Active Participation and Waste Collection Efforts
The drive saw cadets and former cadets working diligently to collect a substantial amount of plastic waste, polythene bags, and various other pollutants littering the ghat area. All collected materials were systematically handed over to the Varanasi Municipal Corporation to ensure proper disposal and recycling, thereby preventing further environmental harm.
Mentorship and Awareness Initiatives
During the cleanup, former NCC cadets took the opportunity to share their valuable experiences and insights with the younger participants. They emphasized that conserving the Ganga is not merely a local responsibility but a critical national duty, urging everyone to contribute to its preservation. The cadets also engaged with visitors and tourists at the ghat, spreading awareness about the importance of preventing water pollution and adopting a plastic-free lifestyle to safeguard the river's health.
Official Appreciation and Thematic Focus
Officials from the local administration and representatives of the Namami Gange programme were present at the event, where they publicly appreciated the collaborative efforts of the NCC cadets and alumni. A former cadet highlighted that the drive was organized under the theme 'River to New India', which aims to connect the younger generation with environmental service while underscoring the vital importance of water security for the nation's future.
This initiative not only contributed to immediate cleanliness but also fostered a sense of community and environmental stewardship among participants, reinforcing the NCC's commitment to national service and ecological conservation.
