Odisha Heatwave: Six Towns Cross 40°C, IMD Forecasts Rise

Odisha Heatwave Conditions Intensify Across Western Region

The scorching summer heat intensified across Odisha on Sunday, with daytime temperatures soaring past the 40-degrees-Celsius threshold at six different locations in the western part of the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a concerning forecast predicting a gradual but significant rise in mercury levels over the coming days.

Record Temperatures and District-Specific Warnings

Titlagarh recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 41.5 degrees Celsius, closely followed by Bhawanipatna and Bolangir, both registering 41 degrees Celsius. The capital city of Bhubaneswar experienced a maximum temperature of 37.7 degrees Celsius, indicating the widespread nature of the heatwave conditions.

The IMD has issued specific warnings for different regions of Odisha:

  • Heatwave Alert: Four districts—Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bolangir, and Bargarh—are under a heatwave warning likely to persist for three days starting Tuesday.
  • Hot and Humid Conditions: Eleven coastal districts are expected to experience uncomfortably hot and humid weather conditions for the next six days beginning Monday.

Meteorological Factors and Official Response

Manorama Mohanty, head of the regional IMD centre, explained the meteorological factors contributing to the temperature surge. "The current wind patterns combined with clear sky conditions are creating ideal circumstances for mercury levels to rise steadily," she stated, emphasizing the scientific basis for the forecast.

In response to the IMD's heatwave predictions, the office of the Special Relief Commissioner has proactively issued an advisory to all district collectors across Odisha. This official communication outlines necessary precautions and preparedness measures to mitigate the impact of extreme heat on public health and infrastructure.

IMD's Comprehensive Heat Advisory

The India Meteorological Department has released a series of detailed recommendations to help residents cope with the challenging weather conditions. These advisories cover both heatwave scenarios and general hot and humid environments, providing practical guidance for vulnerable populations including the elderly, children, and outdoor workers.

With temperatures expected to rise by four to six degrees Celsius over the next five days, authorities are urging citizens to take necessary precautions, stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and follow official health guidelines to prevent heat-related illnesses.
