The forest department of Odisha has officially launched a detailed inquiry into the tragic deaths of three women following an elephant attack in Dhenkanal district on Tuesday. Forest, Environment and Climate Change Minister Ganesh Ram Singkhuntia confirmed the investigation on Wednesday, highlighting the urgency of addressing human-wildlife conflicts in the region.
Minister Calls for Public Caution and Awareness
Minister Singkhuntia stated that the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) has been directed to conduct a thorough enquiry into the incident. He emphasized that while the government is implementing all possible measures to reduce such occurrences, public cooperation is crucial. "People must exercise greater caution and avoid venturing close to elephants," he urged, noting that many incidents stem from a lack of awareness.
The minister pointed out that the forests in Dhenkanal and Angul districts are home to over 700 elephants, leading to frequent human-elephant interactions. "Public awareness and safer behaviour are essential to reduce risk," he asserted, adding that the government has been consistently working to enhance safety protocols and educational campaigns.

Singkhuntia cited previous cases where individuals approached elephants to take selfies, resulting in fatal outcomes. "People should refrain from going near wild animals under any circumstances," he cautioned, stressing the importance of respecting wildlife boundaries.
He also revealed that Odisha has a significant elephant population of more than 2,300 animals. To accommodate them, there is a pressing need to expand their habitats. "The government has been working in that direction as well," he assured, indicating ongoing efforts to create safer environments for both elephants and local communities.
