Nor'wester Wreaks Havoc in Odisha's Mayurbhanj District, Claims Two Lives
A devastating nor'wester accompanied by a tornado and hailstorm struck four villages in Mayurbhanj district's Karanjia block on Sunday, resulting in two fatalities and leaving 29 people injured. The severe weather system caused significant damage to houses and infrastructure, spreading panic across the affected areas.
Tragic Losses and Immediate Response
The deceased have been identified as Police Naik, a 45-year-old resident of Keonjhar district, and Malati Mohanta, a 50-year-old woman from Tato village in Karanjia block. Both victims tragically lost their lives after being caught in the tornado while traveling on the road around 4:30 PM.
In response to the calamity, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased person. The state government has also committed to providing free medical treatment to all injured individuals affected by the storm.
Extensive Damage and Medical Emergency
The villages of Kia, Kankada, Paniposi, and Dumuria in Karanjia block bore the brunt of the nor'wester's fury. The storm system, which included both tornado activity and hailstorms, caused widespread destruction across these communities.
Medical authorities reported that 23 injured individuals are currently undergoing treatment at Karanjia hospital, while six critically injured patients have been transferred to Dharanidhar Medical College and Hospital in Keonjhar for specialized care.
Storm Impact and Relief Measures
The severe weather event created chaotic scenes across the affected villages, with three motorcycles and several pedestrians being blown away by the powerful winds. Numerous trees were uprooted, adding to the destruction and creating hazardous conditions for residents.
Mayurbhanj District Collector Hemakanta Say confirmed that cooked food would be provided to all affected people in the storm-ravaged areas. The administration has also pledged to offer necessary assistance to those who lost their homes in the calamity, ensuring support for rebuilding and recovery efforts.
Weather Warnings and Meteorological Context
The India Meteorological Department's Bhubaneswar office had issued advance warnings about the impending severe weather. Around 3 PM on Sunday, approximately 90 minutes before the storm hit, meteorologists alerted residents about:
- Light to moderate rainfall with lightning activity
- Gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kilometers per hour
- Potential hailstorm and thunderstorm conditions
These warnings specifically covered Mayurbhanj district along with Nayagarh, Khurda, Cuttack, and Ganjam districts, indicating a broader weather system affecting multiple regions of Odisha.
The nor'wester, a common pre-monsoon weather phenomenon in eastern India, typically brings sudden thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and strong winds. However, the intensity of this particular event, combined with tornado formation and hailstorms, created unusually dangerous conditions that overwhelmed local preparedness measures.
Emergency response teams have been deployed to the affected areas to assess the full extent of the damage and coordinate relief operations. Local authorities are working to restore normalcy while providing immediate assistance to those impacted by this natural disaster.
