Pakistan Launches Border Strikes Against Militant Hideouts
In a significant military operation, Pakistan announced early Sunday that it carried out targeted strikes along its border with Afghanistan. The action aimed at dismantling hideouts used by Pakistani militants, whom Islamabad blames for a recent surge in deadly attacks within the country. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar described the strikes as "intelligence-based, selective operations" targeting seven camps belonging to the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and its affiliates, including an Islamic State group affiliate in the border region.
Escalating Tensions and Recent Attacks
The strikes come in the wake of heightened violence, including a suicide bombing in Bajaur district where an explosives-laden vehicle rammed into a security post, killing 11 soldiers and a child. Authorities identified the attacker as an Afghan national. Hours before the border operation, another suicide bomber targeted a security convoy in Bannu district, resulting in the deaths of two soldiers, including a lieutenant colonel. Pakistan's military had previously warned that it would not "exercise any restraint" and would pursue operations against those responsible, regardless of location, signaling rising tensions with Kabul.
Tarar emphasized that Pakistan possesses "conclusive evidence" linking recent attacks, such as a suicide bombing at a Shiite mosque in Islamabad that killed 31 worshippers earlier this month, to militants operating under the direction of Afghanistan-based leadership. He stated that Pakistan has repeatedly urged Afghanistan's Taliban rulers to take verifiable steps to prevent militant groups from using Afghan territory for attacks, but alleged no substantive action has been taken.
Regional Implications and International Calls
Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been strained since October, when deadly border clashes resulted in numerous casualties. A Qatar-mediated ceasefire has largely held, but talks in Istanbul failed to produce a formal agreement. Tarar called on the international community to pressure Afghanistan's Taliban authorities to uphold their commitments under the Doha agreement, which includes not allowing their soil to be used against other countries. Pakistan has experienced a surge in militant violence in recent years, primarily attributed to the TTP and outlawed Baloch separatist groups, with Islamabad accusing the TTP of operating from inside Afghanistan—a claim denied by both the group and Kabul.
