Pakistan Government Calls for Public Fuel Conservation Amid Regional Instability
The Pakistani government has issued a formal appeal to its citizens, urging them to adopt immediate fuel conservation measures. This move aims to mitigate the risk of petroleum product supply disruptions in the coming days, as reported by Dawn newspaper. The warning comes amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East, which have triggered a global oil crisis affecting multiple nations, including Pakistan.
High-Level Meeting Reviews Austerity and Fuel Reserves
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a critical meeting in Islamabad to review recently announced fuel conservation and austerity steps. According to a handout released after the meeting, the government emphasized that while adequate stocks of petroleum products are currently available to meet requirements, the unstable situation in the Middle East could severely impact future fuel supplies. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) stated that arrangements are underway to procure additional supplies, but conservation remains a priority.
The meeting focused on the country's fuel reserves, consumption levels, and incoming petroleum cargoes. Participants included Chief of Defence Staff and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, National Security Adviser Lt Gen Asim Malik, and several federal ministers, highlighting the national security implications of the issue.
Unprecedented Austerity Measures Implemented
In response to the crisis stemming from the US-Israel war on Iran, the government has introduced sweeping austerity measures. These include:
- A 50 per cent reduction in fuel allowances for official vehicles.
- The introduction of a four-day work week for many sectors.
- 50 per cent of public sector staff working from home, excluding those in essential services.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif asserted, "We are able to provide relief to the people because of the policy of austerity." The Intelligence Bureau (IB) has been tasked with monitoring and auditing the implementation of these measures, ensuring compliance across government departments.
Public Encouraged to Adjust Habits and Prepare for Scenarios
The government's handout reiterated an appeal to the public to conserve petrol and diesel, specifically urging affluent citizens to lead by example in adopting austerity practices. During the meeting, it was emphasized that the country must prepare for all possible scenarios, requiring people to adjust their daily habits.
Citizens are encouraged to adopt carpooling and avoid unnecessary travel to reduce fuel consumption. The Prime Minister directed authorities to devise a comprehensive strategy in coordination with provinces to effectively handle any emergency situations. He further instructed all relevant departments to remain ready to take emergency steps if required.
Monitoring and Future Steps
The overall situation is being closely monitored, with records of petroleum products maintained to detect any irregularities and ensure timely countermeasures. The handout warned that "in view of the unstable situation in the Middle East and the region, which could severely affect fuel supplies, further conservation measures will have to be taken in the coming days."
This proactive approach underscores the government's commitment to stabilizing fuel supplies amidst global uncertainties, while calling for collective public responsibility to navigate the potential challenges ahead.
