Porcupine Ventures into Vadodara University Campus, Climbs to Fifth Floor
In an unusual wildlife encounter, a porcupine strayed onto the campus of Navrachana University in the Bhayli area of Vadodara on Tuesday morning. The incident prompted university staff to immediately alert the forest department for assistance.
Swift Response and Capture Operation
University employees first spotted the animal roaming the premises and quickly informed officials. A team from the forest department rushed to the campus to handle the situation. However, by the time they arrived, the porcupine had already made its way up the building using the staircase, reaching the fifth floor where it entered a room.
Forest officials located the animal and strategically placed a cage outside the room. After a brief waiting period, the porcupine walked into the trap, allowing the team to safely capture it and transport it away from the university grounds.
Safety Concerns and Urban Wildlife Patterns
The university had only a few students on campus at the time, as the incident occurred early in the morning. Staff members exercised caution throughout the event, aware that porcupines possess sharp, barbed quills capable of causing serious injuries if threatened.
Officials noted that the ravines along the Vishwamitri River support a significant population of porcupines. These animals occasionally wander into urban areas of Vadodara. Previous sightings have been reported in the Sama area and on Rajmahal Road during late-night hours.
Environmental Factors and Habitat Preferences
Navrachana University features a sprawling campus with extensive green cover, which may attract wildlife seeking wooded areas and grasslands. Porcupines naturally prefer such environments, explaining their presence in and around the university premises.
This incident underscores the ongoing interaction between urban development and local wildlife in Vadodara, highlighting the importance of coordinated responses between educational institutions and forest authorities to ensure both human safety and animal welfare.
