Pune Residents Endure Scorching Sunday as Mercury Crosses 40°C Mark

Residents across Pune battled intense heat on Sunday as multiple locations recorded maximum temperatures soaring above the 40°C threshold. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that several areas experienced extreme weather conditions, with Lohegaon emerging as the hottest spot in the region.

Record-Breaking Temperatures Across the City

According to detailed weather reports from IMD, Lohegaon recorded a blistering maximum temperature of 41.9°C, making it the hottest pocket in Pune. Koregaon Park followed closely with 41.8°C, while Shivajinagar saw the mercury touch 40.7°C. Chinchwad also crossed the significant 40°C mark, highlighting the widespread nature of the heatwave.

Other areas narrowly avoided crossing the 40-degree threshold but still experienced severe heat. Magarpatta recorded 39.9°C and Lavale reached 39.5°C, both indicating uncomfortable conditions for residents. The combination of high temperatures and low humidity created particularly challenging environmental conditions.

Meteorological Factors Behind the Heat Surge

IMD officials explained that the temperature spike is attributed to a pre-rainfall system developing over Karnataka and adjoining Maharashtra regions. "An anti-cyclonic circulation lies over interior Maharashtra and adjoining Telangana and north interior Karnataka in lower and middle tropospheric levels," stated the weather department in their technical analysis.

This atmospheric pattern has created conditions conducive to heat accumulation, with relative humidity levels dropping significantly. Lohegaon recorded humidity as low as 17%, exacerbating the dry and parched conditions across the city.

Weather Forecast and Expected Relief

IMD's forecast for Monday indicates potential relief from the extreme heat. The bureau predicts a partly cloudy sky that will become generally cloudy toward afternoon or evening. Thunderstorm with lightning and light rain are very likely, according to meteorological projections.

A senior IMD official provided additional details about expected weather patterns: "Isolated light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorm, lightning, and gusty winds (speed reaching 30-40 kmph) likely over coastal Maharashtra during April 19 to 21, and Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada during April 19 to 23."

Current Conditions and Safety Advisory

Despite the heatwave conditions, no rainfall was recorded across any of the observation stations on Sunday, including Pashan, NDA and Lavale. With summer heat peaking, health authorities have issued important safety recommendations:

  • Stay adequately hydrated throughout the day
  • Avoid direct sun exposure during peak afternoon hours
  • Monitor weather updates for changing conditions
  • Take necessary precautions for vulnerable populations

The extreme temperatures represent a significant weather event for Pune, with meteorological conditions suggesting both the intensity of current heat and the potential for relief through expected precipitation in the coming days.
