Pune Municipal Corporation Investigates Water Pollution at Pashan Lake
In response to alarming reports of mass fish deaths, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched a comprehensive investigation into water pollution at Pashan Lake. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, prompted immediate action from civic authorities to assess environmental damage and identify potential contaminants.
Water Samples Collected for Testing
On Friday, a dedicated team of PMC officials visited Pashan Lake to gather critical water samples for laboratory analysis. Ganesh Sonune, the environment officer, confirmed that the samples have been dispatched for rigorous testing. The results, expected within a few days, will guide the formulation of targeted measures to reduce pollutants and restore the lake's ecological balance.
Disciplinary Actions Taken Against Officials
Following the incident, the civic administration has initiated disciplinary proceedings against several officials for alleged negligence. A show-cause notice has been issued to the head of PMC's drainage department, questioning dereliction of duty. Additionally, four senior officials—two from the drainage department and two from solid waste management—are under scrutiny. Deputy Commissioner Santosh Warule emphasized in the notice, "It has been found that there has been a dereliction of duty on your part regarding this work." Additional Commissioner Pavneet Kaur further demanded accountability, asking, "Why should responsibility not be fixed upon you for the negligence or laxity in your work?"
Environmental Concerns and Activist Criticism
Environmental activist Anant Gharat voiced strong criticism, highlighting the lake's significance beyond being a mere waterbody. He accused PMC officials of consistent neglect in its upkeep, raising concerns about long-term environmental degradation. This incident underscores broader issues of urban water management and conservation efforts in Pune.
Additional Measures and Future Steps
PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram outlined further actions, including issuing a show-cause notice to a private consultant, conducting inquiries into Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs), and inspecting surrounding factories by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). These steps aim to address systemic failures and prevent future pollution episodes. The civic body remains committed to implementing corrective measures based on the forthcoming test report, ensuring the protection of Pashan Lake and its ecosystem.
