Pune Witnesses Fleeting Drizzle with No Official Rainfall Recorded by IMD
Parts of Pune experienced very light, fleeting showers on Wednesday evening, creating a brief respite from the dry conditions. However, no official rainfall was recorded at any India Meteorological Department (IMD) observatories or automatic weather stations across the city.
Cloudy Skies and Isolated Drizzle Reported by Residents
Cloudy skies prevailed around noon on Wednesday, setting the stage for the unexpected weather event. Residents across various pockets in Pune reported drizzle-like conditions, describing it as a light, misty rain. Despite these reports, the showers were too insignificant to be measured by IMD instruments, highlighting the localized and minimal nature of the precipitation.
S D Sanap, a scientist at IMD, commented on the situation, stating, "No observatory or automatic weather station recorded rainfall, though it was reported in parts of the city. It was too low to be captured, but we understand from public feedback that it did drizzle in some areas."
Meteorological Factors Behind the Light Showers
Sanap attributed the conditions to a combination of atmospheric factors. He explained that a trough in the easterlies led to moisture incursion over the region. When combined with daytime heating, this created favorable conditions for isolated, very light showers. This meteorological setup is common during transitional weather periods and can result in such fleeting precipitation events.
IMD Forecast for Pune and Surrounding Areas
According to the IMD's local forecast for Pune and surrounding areas, similar weather patterns are expected to continue. On Thursday, thundercloud development with lightning and very light rain is likely. Clear skies could turn partly cloudy towards the afternoon or evening, providing potential for more isolated showers.
Day temperatures are expected to remain around 34–36°C over the next few days, with minimum temperatures hovering between 18–21°C. This indicates a warm but comfortable climate for residents. From Friday onwards, the weather is expected to be mainly clear, with no rainfall indicated in the forecast until March 24, suggesting a return to drier conditions.
Public Feedback Versus Instrumental Data
The discrepancy between public reports of drizzle and the lack of official rainfall recordings underscores the challenges in measuring very light precipitation. IMD instruments are calibrated to capture measurable rainfall, and when showers are as minimal as those experienced in Pune, they often fall below detection thresholds. This event serves as a reminder of how localized weather phenomena can occur without being formally documented by meteorological agencies.
Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts, especially with the possibility of thunderclouds and lightning on Thursday. While no significant rainfall is expected in the coming days, the IMD's predictions highlight the dynamic nature of Pune's weather during this period.
