Punjab Pollution Control Board Conducts Workshop on New Solid Waste Management Rules 2026
The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has taken a proactive step to enhance preparedness among officials for the upcoming Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026. A comprehensive capacity-building workshop was organized in Chandigarh, ahead of the rules' official rollout scheduled for April 1. This initiative aims to ensure a smooth and effective implementation across the state.
Workshop Details and Key Focus Areas
The training programme was held at the prestigious Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration in Chandigarh. It concentrated on the significant changes introduced in the revised SWM Rules, which serve as an update to the 2016 framework. The new regulations place a strong emphasis on scientific waste management practices, mandatory segregation at source, and enhanced accountability measures for all stakeholders involved.
Participation and Expert Sessions
Approximately 268 officials attended the workshop, representing a diverse group of professionals. This included executive officers from various urban local bodies, designated SWM nodal officers, and dedicated staff members from the PPCB. The primary objective of the session was to clarify specific roles and establish clear implementation mechanisms under the new regulatory regime.
Dhamodharan K, an assistant professor at the Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (TIET), led an informative session. He discussed the key provisions of the new rules and addressed potential implementation challenges that officials might encounter. Additionally, Akshit Kapil, an assistant environmental engineer at the PPCB, provided a detailed outline of the major changes and their practical implications at the field level.
Broader Strategic Efforts
The PPCB has stated that this workshop is part of a larger, ongoing effort to build capacity across multiple departments. The goal is to foster a collaborative environment and ensure a seamless transition to the new SWM Rules throughout Punjab. By equipping officials with the necessary knowledge and tools, the board aims to promote sustainable waste management practices and improve overall environmental governance in the region.
