Punjab Reports 4 New Stubble Burning Cases as Madhya Pradesh Continues to Lead Nationally
On Sunday, Punjab recorded four new incidents of crop residue burning, elevating its total for the current season to 14. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh maintained its position at the forefront, with a staggering 18,376 cases reported so far this season.
National Overview of Crop Residue Burning
According to data from the Consortium for Research on Agroecosystem Monitoring and Modeling From Space (CREAMS), which monitors stubble burning across India biannually after paddy and wheat harvests, Madhya Pradesh accounted for 1,058 out of the 1,815 cases reported nationwide on Sunday. This brings the cumulative national count to 25,976 incidents for the season.
Madhya Pradesh has consistently dominated stubble burning statistics, representing over 50% of all cases recorded in the past five years. Since 2022, out of a total of 224,515 reported incidents, 113,062 have originated from Madhya Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh follows in second place with 53,538 cases, while Punjab has recorded 47,991, Haryana 9,805, and Delhi 119 incidents.

During the previous paddy harvesting season in the 2025 kharif period, Madhya Pradesh also led with 17,067 cases, followed by Uttar Pradesh (7,290) and Punjab (5,114). This pattern underscores a persistent issue in these regions.
