Punjab's First Air Pollution Control Device Installed in Patiala
In a significant move to combat urban air pollution, the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) and the Municipal Corporation have successfully installed the state's inaugural Air Pollution Control Device (APCD) at the Badungar crematorium in Patiala. This pilot project, implemented under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), marks a pioneering step in Punjab's environmental strategy, with plans to replicate the initiative across all non-attainment cities and eventually scale it statewide.
Bridging Tradition and Technology
PPCB Chairperson Reena Gupta emphasized the importance of balancing scientific solutions with cultural practices. "Air quality management demands solutions that are both scientifically sound and socially acceptable," she stated. "Traditional cremation practices are an integral part of our cultural fabric, and this initiative demonstrates how technology can harmonise tradition with environmental responsibility. The installation of the device is a step towards reducing emissions at source."
Mayor Kundan Gogia highlighted that this initiative represents a major advancement in Punjab's clean air efforts by integrating technological innovation with practical on-ground realities. Deputy Commissioner Varjeet Walia added that the pilot under NCAP will serve as a replicable model for other cities, ensuring measurable reductions in particulate pollution while respecting community practices.
Targeting Particulate Emissions
The newly installed APCD is specifically designed to significantly reduce emissions of particulate matter, including PM10 and PM2.5, which are critical contributors to urban air pollution often overlooked in traditional mitigation efforts. "The intervention aligns with the broader strategy of source-specific mitigation, which is essential for effective air quality management and public health protection," explained Deputy Commissioner Walia.
PPCB officials have adopted a pragmatic approach by introducing pollution control technology that works alongside traditional methods rather than replacing them.
