Mysuru Forest Department Implements Rail Fencing in Bandipur Tiger Reserve

The forest department in Mysuru has made a crucial decision to address the persistent human-elephant conflict. They plan to install rail fencing along 27 kilometers inside the Bandipur Tiger Reserve. This initiative aims to prevent wild elephants from straying into human settlements and causing damage.

Project Approval and Funding Details

The state government has officially sanctioned this project for the reserve, which covers a vast area of 1,100 square kilometers. Officials estimate the total cost of the rail fencing at Rs 40.5 crore. They have already floated a tender for the initial phase, focusing on an 8-kilometer stretch as part of the first implementation stage.

Collaboration with Indian Railways

To ensure the project's success, the forest department has entered into an agreement with Indian Railways. This pact secures the supply of tracks needed for the fencing. Although the cost is significant, at approximately Rs 1.5 crore per kilometer, the department has approved it. They base this decision on the method's proven effectiveness in other parts of the state, where it has successfully kept elephants within forest boundaries.

Director's Insights on Implementation

Bandipur Tiger Reserve director S Prabhkaran confirmed the government's approval for the 27-kilometer fencing this year. He mentioned that the tender for the first 8 kilometers targets the Omkara range of the reserve. Prabhkaran also highlighted additional measures to protect the reserve during the summer season.

The department has prepared a fireline of 2,000 kilometers against a target of 2,800 kilometers for this year. We have also taken steps for the appointment of watchers to tackle wildfires, he added, emphasizing their proactive approach to forest safety.

This comprehensive strategy combines physical barriers with fire prevention efforts to safeguard both wildlife and local communities.
