Rare Rusty-Spotted Cat Rescued from Trap in Navi Mumbai, Released into Forest
In a heartening wildlife rescue operation, a rare rusty-spotted cat was saved from a trap in Dhutum village, Uran taluka, Navi Mumbai, and subsequently released into its natural forest habitat. The incident, which unfolded on Sunday morning, highlights the collaborative efforts of local activists and wildlife volunteers.
Discovery and Rescue Operation
Sharad Dhavji Thakur, a social activist from Dhutum village, made the initial discovery during his morning walk. He noticed unusual movement by the roadside in the Dhutum area and upon investigation, found the cat ensnared in a noose set by an unknown individual. Acting swiftly, Thakur alerted the animal welfare organization Care of Nature.
The founders of Care of Nature, Bhushan Raju Mumbaikar and Pravin Kadu, were immediately informed. A team from the organization, led by Raju Mumbaikar, promptly arrived at the location. After a thorough inspection of the area, they carefully rescued the rusty-spotted cat from the noose and secured it in an iron cage for temporary safety.
Coordination with Forest Authorities
Raju Mumbaikar then notified Sunil Mahadik, the forest ranger of the Maharashtra Forest Department's Uran Forest Range. This coordination ensured that the rescue adhered to proper wildlife protocols. Following an assessment, it was determined that the animal had not sustained any injuries during its ordeal.
Release into Natural Habitat
In the presence of Forest Guard Rajendra Karande, the rusty-spotted cat was released into the forest at Mouje Vesvi, Uran. This location was chosen to allow the cat free movement in its natural habitat, promoting its well-being and survival. The release was conducted with minimal disturbance to ensure the animal's comfort.
About the Rusty-Spotted Cat
The rusty-spotted cat, known locally in Marathi as Vaghati, is an extremely shy and nocturnal species. It holds the distinction of being the smallest cat in the world. Its body coloration, resembling rusty metal, provides excellent camouflage within its habitat, aiding in its elusive nature.
Key characteristics include:
- Nocturnal behavior, making it rarely seen by humans.
- Extreme shyness, contributing to its status as a rare species.
- Small size, which distinguishes it from other feline species.
