Unexpected Snowfall Blocks Key Tourist Route in Himachal
An unusual snowfall in Himachal Pradesh's Chamba district disrupted traffic on the Dalhousie-Lakkarmandi-Khajjiar route for nearly two hours on Monday, June 22, 2026, according to officials. The sudden weather phenomenon took both locals and tourists by surprise, causing a significant traffic jam involving several tourist vehicles.
Despite the inconvenience, many tourists expressed delight at witnessing snow in June, a rare event in the region. The Public Works Department (PWD) promptly deployed earth movers to clear the snow and restore traffic flow on the affected route, minimizing further disruption.
Rain and Thunderstorms Lash Parts of Himachal
In addition to the snowfall, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning affected several parts of Himachal Pradesh in the 24 hours ending Monday morning. Areas including Shimla, Sundernagar, Kangra, Jot, and Murari Devi experienced thunderstorm activity.
Jot recorded the highest rainfall at 22.8 mm, followed by Slapper with 14.3 mm, Dhaulakuan with 9 mm, Bharmaur with 5 mm, Sundernagar with 3.6 mm, Sangla with 3.2 mm, and both Manali and Shimla with 3 mm each. The precipitation comes as a precursor to the monsoon season, which typically arrives in Himachal in late June.
Yellow Warning Issued for Next Four Days
The Shimla Meteorological Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph at isolated places across the state for the next four days. Residents and tourists are advised to take precautions against the adverse weather conditions, which may affect travel and outdoor activities.
Authorities have urged travelers to stay updated on weather forecasts and road conditions, particularly in higher altitude areas where snowfall can occur unexpectedly. The rare June snowfall in Chamba district highlights the unpredictable nature of mountain weather, even as summer approaches its peak.
