Truck Driver Killed in Early Morning Landslide on Badrinath Highway
A 55-year-old truck driver lost his life in a tragic landslide incident that occurred near Totaghati in Tehri district during the early hours of Monday. The accident took place around 3 am when the driver, identified as Murari Lal from Ghuttiyani village in Chamoli district, was traveling on the Badrinath national highway.
Chronic Landslide Zone Claims Another Victim
The Totaghati area is known as a chronic landslide zone, where unstable terrain frequently poses dangers to travelers. In this incident, debris and large boulders came crashing down onto the highway, directly hitting Murari Lal's truck. The force of the landslide completely buried the vehicle under mounds of earth and rock.
Local officials initially expressed apprehension that someone might be trapped inside the cabin of the truck, which was completely covered by the landslide material. The severity of the situation prompted immediate emergency response measures.
SDRF Night Rescue Operation
A specialized State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team, led by Sub-Inspector Sawar Singh Negi, quickly reached the accident site and launched a challenging rescue operation in complete darkness. The team worked diligently through the night to locate and extract any potential survivors from the buried vehicle.
"After persistent efforts in the dark, the team successfully recovered a body from the truck," confirmed Sub-Inspector Negi following the operation. The recovery operation was particularly difficult due to the limited visibility and the substantial amount of debris covering the vehicle.
Highway Blockage and Clearance
The landslide caused significant disruption to traffic on the important Badrinath national highway. The road remained completely blocked for several hours due to the accumulated debris, boulders, and mud that covered the thoroughfare.
Cleanup operations commenced later in the morning, with workers and machinery deployed to clear the highway. The removal of boulders and mud eventually restored traffic flow, though the process took considerable time and effort given the volume of material that had fallen onto the road.
This incident highlights the ongoing dangers presented by landslide-prone areas in the Himalayan region, particularly along crucial transportation routes like the Badrinath highway.
