UAE Air Defences Engage Iranian Missiles and Drones, Resulting in Minor Injury to Indian National
On March 22, the United Arab Emirates' air defence systems successfully intercepted a significant aerial assault originating from Iran. The engagement involved four ballistic missiles and 25 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), according to official statements from Abu Dhabi authorities.
Debris Incident in Al Shawamekh Area
Following the interception of a ballistic missile, debris fell in the Al Shawamekh residential area of Abu Dhabi. The Abu Dhabi Media Office confirmed this incident in a post on the social media platform X, noting that emergency teams responded promptly to the scene.
The statement revealed that the debris caused a minor injury to an Indian national. Authorities emphasized the importance of obtaining information solely from official sources and avoiding the spread of rumours or unverified details.
Regional Tensions and Casualty Figures
This event occurs amidst heightened regional tensions, particularly involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. The conflict has entered its fourth week as of March 23. Since the onset of Iranian attacks, UAE air defence systems have engaged a total of:
- 345 ballistic missiles
- 15 cruise missiles
- 1,773 UAVs
The attacks have resulted in the loss of two members of the UAE armed forces, along with six Pakistani, Nepalese, Bangladeshi, and Palestinian nationals. Additionally, 160 individuals, including Emiratis and foreign nationals from various countries, have been injured.
Impact on Indian Nationals
In the broader Middle East crisis, six Indian nationals have lost their lives, with recent casualties reported in Saudi Arabia and Oman. However, the UAE has been proactive in defending against missiles and providing immediate care to the injured.
The UAE Ministry of Defence maintains that the country is "fully prepared" to address any threats, supported by a well-equipped defence system and a robust strategic stockpile of munitions for sustained interception capabilities.
UAE's Assurance to India
Abdulnasser Alshaali, the UAE's ambassador to India, stated on Saturday that the safety of Indians residing in the Gulf nation is a "priority." He assured that the approximately four million Indians in the UAE are protected and treated like family.
Alshaali commended India for co-sponsoring a United Nations resolution condemning Iran's attack on Gulf countries, highlighting that the UAE will remember India as one of the first nations to stand in solidarity. He described the Indian community as integral to the UAE's fabric, contributing economically and socially.
The ambassador emphasized that the safety of Indian nationals is a "personal responsibility" for the UAE leadership, concluding with an absolute commitment to protecting all residents who have built their lives in the country.
