Southern parts of Uttar Pradesh are grappling with a severe heatwave as temperatures surged past the 40 degrees Celsius mark on Tuesday, with no immediate relief forecasted in the coming days. Meteorological officials have warned that the mercury is likely to climb even higher, exacerbating the already sweltering conditions across the state.
Record-Breaking Temperatures Across Key Cities
Banda recorded the highest temperature in the state at a scorching 42.6 degrees Celsius, setting a concerning benchmark for the ongoing heatwave. Other major cities also experienced extreme heat, with Jhansi reaching 40.5 degrees Celsius, Prayagraj at 40.4 degrees Celsius, and Varanasi hitting 40.1 degrees Celsius. These figures highlight the widespread nature of the temperature spike affecting urban and rural areas alike.
Lucknow's Weather Conditions and Forecast
The state capital, Lucknow, witnessed clear skies and hot winds on Tuesday, contributing to uncomfortable conditions. The maximum temperature settled at 38.1 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was 19.8 degrees Celsius. However, this respite may be short-lived, as experts predict a significant increase in the coming days.
Mohammad Danish, a senior scientist at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Lucknow, provided insights into the weather patterns. He stated that no active weather systems are expected over the next four to five days, meaning dry westerly winds will continue to dominate. This persistent airflow is a key factor driving the rising temperatures.
Anticyclone Movement and Further Temperature Rise
An anticyclone currently over peninsular regions, including Karnataka and Maharashtra, is gradually moving towards central India. This meteorological phenomenon is anticipated to push temperatures up by an additional 3 to 4 degrees Celsius. As a result, maximum temperatures in Lucknow and its adjoining areas are expected to cross the 40 degrees Celsius threshold soon and remain above normal levels in the foreseeable future.
The combination of dry winds and the shifting anticyclone creates a perfect storm for escalating heat, posing challenges for residents and authorities.
