Uttarakhand Braces for Extended Mild Winter as Temperatures Stay Above Normal

Meteorological officials in Dehradun have confirmed that temperatures across the plains and foothills of Uttarakhand are set to remain significantly above seasonal norms in the coming days. The region is experiencing a persistent dry spell with no major weather systems on the horizon to disrupt this pattern.

Limited Relief Expected from Upcoming Weather System

A weak western disturbance is forecast to affect the state around February 15, but its impact is projected to be minimal and short-lived. According to C S Tomar, director of the regional meteorological centre, "The upcoming western disturbance appears weak and short-lived. Its impact will largely be confined to higher regions in the northern part of the state, with little effect on lower elevations."

Officials anticipate that light rain or snowfall may occur in northern parts of the state, primarily in higher reaches, while the plains and foothill areas are unlikely to see any significant weather changes. Clear skies and dry conditions are expected to prevail across most districts.

Uneven Winter Patterns and Concerning Deficits

Uttarakhand has witnessed an inconsistent winter season thus far. While parts of the higher Himalayas received intermittent snowfall in late December and early January, a prolonged dry spell dominated much of the first half of January. This pattern has led to rising temperatures, particularly in the plains and valleys, where maximum temperatures have remained above normal for extended periods.

The Meteorological Centre reports concerning precipitation deficits:

  • Scanty rain and snowfall recorded so far in February with a deficit of approximately 90%
  • Cumulative shortfall for the winter season (January–February) stands at about 25%

Even recent snowfall episodes have been patchy and largely confined to higher altitudes, providing only brief relief. The absence of strong western disturbances has resulted in limited snowfall accumulation, raising concerns over water availability and winter crops.

Temperature Anomalies Across the State

Day temperatures continue to stay above normal across most parts of Uttarakhand. Specific observations include:

  • In Dehradun, the maximum temperature on Tuesday crossed 25°C, nearly 4°C above the seasonal average
  • Mukteshwar in Nainital district recorded a day temperature of 16°C, about 2°C above normal

Meteorological officials indicate that the current trend of above-normal temperatures is likely to persist in the near term, extending the mild winter conditions that have characterized the past several weeks. The ongoing dry spell shows no signs of significant disruption, keeping daytime temperatures elevated compared to historical averages for this period.
