The city of Varanasi experienced a dramatic shift in weather conditions on Friday, as drizzle and powerful winds swept across the region. Dark clouds gathered from the early morning hours, eventually leading to rainfall that impacted various areas. The district has been placed under an orange alert by meteorological authorities, with specific warnings for hailstorms in western Uttar Pradesh.
Strong Winds and Rain Disrupt Daily Life in Varanasi
Strong winds, reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour, hit Varanasi starting Friday morning, causing significant disruptions to daily activities. The winds were accompanied by rain, affecting neighborhoods such as Banaras Station, Shivpur, Sindhaura, Ramnagar, Cantt, Lanka, Assi, Manduadih, and Maidagin. While city residents welcomed the relief from the heat, the adverse weather posed challenges for many.
Farmers Anxious Over Potential Wheat Crop Damage
Farmers in Varanasi are expressing deep concern about the potential damage to their wheat crops due to the unseasonal rain. Fields in areas like Rohaniya and Mohansarai have been drenched, raising fears of crop losses. In response, the agriculture department has advised affected farmers to register claims under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana by calling the toll-free number 14447 within 72 hours of the incident.
IMD Reports and Temperature Details
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Varanasi recorded a maximum temperature of 30.2 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 22.6 degrees Celsius on Friday. The relative humidity showed an increase from 41% in the morning to 54% in the evening, indicating the moist conditions brought by the weather system.
Insurance Claims and Agricultural Support
District Agriculture Officer Sangam Singh has provided guidance for farmers facing issues with the toll-free registration process. He recommended that those unable to register via phone submit written claims directly at the District Agriculture Office or the office of the deputy director of Agriculture to seek insurance compensation for crop damage.
