Varuna Lake Development Sparks Debate in Mysuru
Varuna Lake Development Debate in Mysuru

A debate has erupted in Mysuru over the proposed development and beautification of Varuna Lake, a 173-acre waterbody. Activists and locals are divided on whether the project should proceed, with some advocating for conservation and others pushing for tourism-oriented development.

Activists Raise Concerns

Activists have urged the district administration, tourism department, and Cauvery Neeravari Nigama Ltd (CNNL) to avoid converting the lake into a tourism hub. They argue that such a move could drive away migratory birds and negatively impact the livelihoods of local communities. Environmental activist UN Ravi Kumar emphasized that lake conservation should be inclusive, but lamented that this principle has not been followed in the current plans.

Local Residents Favor Development

On the other hand, local residents point out that without development, the buffer zone of the lake is vulnerable to encroachment by powerful real estate interests. Ahinda Javarappa, a local resident, stated that developmental works worth Rs 15 crore are underway. He highlighted his earlier efforts to bring water from the Varuna canal to the lake and noted that untreated water from nearby residential layouts now contaminates the lake. After prolonged advocacy, government funds were secured for development, which includes using advanced technology to treat sewage water.

Javarappa argued that development will not harm migratory birds or local communities and that the lake remains a lifeline for farmers. He added, "We are working to support this lake conservation."

Opposing Views on Tourism

Activists and some locals allege that the beautification plan is a pretext to promote adventure tourism, which could be disastrous for migratory birds. They cite examples of other lakes that lost their bird populations after beautification projects. The fear is that tourism activities will disrupt the ecosystem and affect the local population dependent on the lake.

The debate underscores the challenge of balancing development with environmental conservation. While development can prevent encroachment and improve water quality, it must be carried out without compromising the ecological integrity of the lake.
