Wayanad Activists Condemn Cyber Attacks and Threats Over Tunnel Road Petition
Environmental and social organizations in Wayanad have issued a strong condemnation against recent cyber attacks and a planned march targeting the residence of prominent environmentalist N Badusha. The backlash emerged following a petition filed by the Wayanad Prakrithi Samrakshana Samithi (WPSS) in the Supreme Court, seeking to cancel the environmental clearance for the controversial Kalladi-Anakkampoyil tunnel road project.
Activists Decry Threats as Undemocratic
At a news conference held in Wayanad on Saturday, green activists labeled the threats as orchestrated by a specific lobby. They emphasized that any form of aggression would be met with legal resistance and public intervention. The activists warned that the unscientific tunnel road could trigger massive disasters, particularly in the Meppadi region, and disrupt the ecological balance of Wayanad and the Anakkampoyil-Thiruvambady areas of Kozhikode.
"Before the haunting memories of Kerala's largest landslide and the lives lost even faded, it is certain that this project will cause widespread harm," the activists stated. They accused the Kerala government of obtaining clearances by providing misleading information, without conducting proper scientific or environmental impact studies.
Defending Constitutional Rights and Environmental Justice
The group asserted that challenging such illegal acts is both a right and a duty of every citizen. "To attack an individual for exercising a constitutional right is a direct threat to democracy," they declared. For activists who have historically fought against issues like ivory and sandalwood smuggling, forest destruction, and quarrying near Edakkal Caves, these threats are not new.
"The greenery and water sources of Wayanad were preserved through the blood and sweat of activists despite facing goondaism. We stand firm: Badusha is not alone," the activists affirmed. They pledged to protect the nature of Wayanad, along with its farmers, tribals, and landless people, at any cost.
Broad Coalition of Support
The news conference saw participation from representatives of various organizations, including:
- Co-Existence Kerala
- Sahyadri Summit
- Paschimaghatta Samrakshana Samiti
- CPI(ML) Red Star
- Human Rights Protection Centre
- SUCI(I)
- Uravu Eco Links
- Green Cross
- Kerala Green Movement
This collective stance underscores the widespread concern over the tunnel road project and the safety of environmental defenders in the region.
