The escalating military tensions in West Asia, particularly between Israel and Iran, have unexpectedly disrupted wedding preparations across North Karnataka, creating a severe shortage of LPG cylinders at marriage halls and forcing families to resort to expensive black-market alternatives.
Widespread Cylinder Shortage Across Multiple Districts
What began as isolated reports in Davanagere district has now spread to numerous regions including Haveri, Gadag, Dharwad, Belagavi, Bagalkot, Ballari, Vijayanagara, and Koppal. Families planning wedding receptions are encountering unprecedented difficulties securing commercial LPG cylinders, with many gas dealers reportedly switching off their mobile phones to avoid customer inquiries.
The situation has created significant stress for parents organizing marriage functions, with some considering simpler weddings with fewer guests as a practical response to the supply uncertainties. Many have turned to catering services as an alternative solution, though this often comes with increased costs and logistical challenges.
Personal Accounts Highlight the Crisis
Virupakshappa, a retired postal superintendent from Holalkere, experienced this crisis firsthand when organizing his son's reception at Taralabalu Hall in Davanagere. Despite the venue's promise to provide commercial gas cylinders for cooking, they failed to deliver, leaving him responsible for feeding 500 guests.
"I had to immediately source cylinders from the black market, paying four times the usual price," Virupakshappa explained. "This situation is particularly distressing for middle-class families who have planned these events months in advance without anticipating such international repercussions."
He emphasized that typical events require 4-5 commercial cylinders for receptions and 10-15 for full wedding ceremonies, quantities that have become nearly impossible to obtain through legitimate channels. Virupakshappa has urged government intervention, calling on district authorities to address the commercial cylinder shortages causing widespread problems.
Industry Perspectives and Broader Impacts
Shambanna, manager of a marriage hall in Haveri, confirmed the cooking gas problem, noting that his establishment previously provided commercial cylinders for weddings and receptions. "The gas agency informed us there was no stock available," he stated, adding that a Monday reception faced the same issue, with marriage hall authorities asking hosts to bring their own cylinders.
The shortage extends beyond wedding venues to affect the broader hospitality industry. Hotel owners in the Davanagere area report similar struggles, with some managing operations using existing stock while others face complete inability to obtain cylinders. Gas agencies consistently respond with "no stock" when commercial cylinders are requested, creating frustration and operational uncertainty throughout the region.
