Elderly Woman Fatally Attacked by Suspected Big Cat in Haldwani Forest
A tragic incident unfolded in the forests near Kaladhungi Road in Haldwani on Thursday, resulting in the death of a 66-year-old woman in a suspected big cat attack. Police confirmed that Ganga Devi, a resident of Peepal Pokhra village, was killed while collecting fodder with her daughter-in-law and a neighbor.
Details of the Fatal Encounter
The three women had entered the forest together but later separated to gather fodder more efficiently. According to police reports, Devi ventured deeper into the wooded area, where she was suddenly attacked by the animal. Hearing her desperate cries, the other two women rushed to her aid but were forced to retreat when the animal aggressively chased them away.
They immediately alerted nearby villagers and contacted the authorities, prompting a swift response from local police and forest officials.
Search and Recovery Efforts
Nainital SSP Manjunath TC stated that a search operation was launched immediately after the alert. Approximately 90 minutes later, Devi's body was recovered about 2 kilometers inside the forest. The authorities noted that it has not yet been determined whether the attack was carried out by a tiger or a leopard.
Police described the injuries as severe, with multiple deep bite marks on her legs, shoulders, arms, and back. Additionally, part of her neck had been consumed by the animal. The body has been sent for a postmortem examination to gather more forensic details.
Authorities' Response and Safety Measures
Following the incident, the forest department initiated efforts to trace and capture the animal. Camera traps are being installed in the area to monitor wildlife activity, and officials have stated that if located, the animal will be tranquillised to prevent further attacks.
Villagers have been strongly advised to avoid entering forest areas until the situation is under control. In a move to support the bereaved family, authorities announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh under state wildlife attack norms.
This incident highlights the ongoing human-wildlife conflict in the region, underscoring the need for enhanced safety protocols and community awareness to prevent such tragedies in the future.
