10 Indians Died Fighting with Russian Forces in Ukraine: Centre to SC
10 Indians Died Fighting with Russian Forces in Ukraine

The Indian government informed the Supreme Court on Thursday that 10 Indian nationals have died while fighting alongside Russian forces in the ongoing war against Ukraine. The Centre, in its submission, stated that while some individuals were misled by unscrupulous agents, many had entered into 'voluntary contracts' with Russian entities.

Details of the Submission

The Ministry of External Affairs, in an affidavit filed before the apex court, revealed that a total of 10 Indians lost their lives while serving as support staff or combatants with the Russian military. The government further noted that several cases of Indian nationals being duped by recruitment agents have come to light, but a significant number had willingly signed agreements with Russian authorities.

Government's Stand

The Centre clarified that it is actively pursuing the matter through diplomatic channels to ensure the safe return of Indian nationals still present in the conflict zone. It also urged citizens to remain cautious of fraudulent recruitment drives promising lucrative jobs in Russia.

The Supreme Court was hearing a petition filed by the families of some of the deceased, seeking directions for the government to take immediate steps to bring back the bodies and provide compensation. The court has sought a detailed report from the Centre on the measures being taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

Background

Reports of Indian nationals being recruited to fight in the Russia-Ukraine war first emerged in early 2025. Many were lured by promises of high salaries and citizenship, only to find themselves deployed in active combat zones. The Indian embassy in Moscow has been working to identify and repatriate those who wish to return.

The government has also launched an awareness campaign to educate citizens about the risks of signing contracts with foreign military entities without proper verification.
