The legal cases that the Adani Group and its top officials, including Chairman Gautam Adani, were facing in the United States concluded on Monday.
Adani Enterprises pays $275 million settlement
Adani Enterprises (AEL), the flagship firm of the Ahmedabad-based Adani Group, has paid $275 million (approximately Rs 2,650 crore at Monday's exchange rate) to settle a case involving apparent violations of Iran-related sanctions. The announcement came from the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) under the US Treasury Department.
US Department of Justice drops criminal charges
In a separate development, the US Department of Justice dropped criminal charges against Gautam Adani and seven other individuals, including his nephew Sagar Adani. The court accepted the motion to dismiss the charges.
Last week, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) also announced a settlement with the group, requiring a payment of $18 million.
New legal team led by Trump lawyer
The settlements followed the Adani Group's engagement of a new legal team led by Robert J. Giuffra Jr., one of US President Donald Trump's personal lawyers. According to a New York Times report last week, Giuffra is also the co-chairman of the prominent law firm Sullivan & Cromwell.
Details of the OFAC case
According to the OFAC release, between November 2023 and June 2025, AEL purchased shipments of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from a Dubai-based trader who claimed to supply Omani and Iraqi gas. The release stated that "red flags should have put AEL on notice that the LPG actually originated from Iran." During that period, AEL caused US financial institutions to process 32 dollar-denominated payments totaling approximately $192 million for these shipments.
