In a significant diplomatic development aimed at halting recent violence, the neighbouring nations of Thailand and Cambodia have formally agreed to a ceasefire. This crucial step follows a period of deadly clashes along their shared border.
High-Level Meeting Seals the Deal
The agreement was finalised and signed during the 3rd Special Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) meeting. This high-stakes gathering took place on December 27, 2025, at the Prom-Pak Kard Permanent Border Checkpoint. This location sits between Cambodia's Pailin Province and Thailand's Chanthaburi Province.
The meeting was notably conducted under the observation of a joint ASEAN Observer Team (AOT). Leading the delegations were two key defence figures: His Excellency General Tea Seiha, who serves as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence of Cambodia, and His Excellency General Nattaphon Narkphanit, the Minister of Defence of Thailand.
Terms and Commitment of the Agreement
The core outcome of the meeting was the adoption and signing of a Joint Statement. In this document, both kingdoms reaffirmed their firm commitment to fully implement the ceasefire. The primary stated goal is to seek lasting peace, stability, and security for the communities living in the border regions, who have been directly affected by the hostilities.
The Cambodian Ministry of National Defence officially announced the ceasefire through a press release issued on the same day. The statement was delivered by the ministry's spokeswoman, H.E. Lieutenant General Maly Socheata. The release confirmed that the meeting commenced in the morning and concluded at 10:20 am local time.
Path Forward for Regional Stability
This ceasefire agreement marks a pivotal turn towards de-escalation after weeks of conflict. The involvement of the ASEAN Observer Team underscores the regional importance of stability between the two Southeast Asian nations. The commitment expressed at the highest levels of defence leadership provides a framework for maintaining calm along the contentious border.
The successful conclusion of this special committee meeting is now seen as a foundational step. Both nations have publicly pledged to translate the signed agreement into concrete actions on the ground, aiming to prevent further loss of life and restore normalcy for border residents.
