A significant overburden collapse occurred at the edge of the Ukani opencast coal mine operated by Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) in Wani, Yavatmal district, on Friday. The incident resulted in two dumpers being buried under a massive mound of soil, but no casualties were reported.
Incident Details
According to sources, the collapse happened suddenly while excavation work was in progress at the mine. Within seconds, a large quantity of soil came crashing down. The drivers of the buried dumpers managed to escape by jumping out just in time, averting any loss of life.
Official Response
Senior officials promptly visited the site and initiated a preliminary inspection and panchnama process. WCL officials at the headquarters in Nagpur confirmed the development, stating that the exact cause of the collapse would be determined after a thorough inquiry. The investigation will be conducted by a panel that includes a team from the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS).
Worker Allegations
Workers and labour unions have demanded action against the officials concerned, alleging that the landslide was "man-made rather than natural." They claimed that safety norms were being ignored during excavation and operational planning inside the mine. Workers asserted that such negligence could have led to a major disaster if the drivers had not escaped in time.
Impact on Operations
Mining operations at the site have been temporarily affected following the collapse. The extent of the disruption and the timeline for resuming normal activities are yet to be determined. Authorities have assured that safety measures will be reviewed and reinforced to prevent such incidents in the future.
This incident highlights the ongoing concerns regarding safety protocols in mining operations, particularly in opencast mines where overburden management is critical. The DGMS-led inquiry is expected to provide recommendations to improve safety standards and prevent similar occurrences.
