A devastating fire tore through a hotel in Delhi's Malviya Nagar on Thursday night, leaving at least 21 people dead and several others injured. In the chaos that followed, local residents emerged as the first responders, rushing to rescue trapped victims even before emergency teams arrived.
Local Heroes in Action
Eyewitnesses described scenes of bravery and desperation as neighbors mobilized to help those trapped in the blazing building. A local shop owner, whose mattress store was nearby, emptied his inventory and used the mattresses to create makeshift landing zones for people jumping from the upper floors to escape the flames.
One rescuer, who wished to remain anonymous, recalled the horror of the scene. 'I saw four bodies at one spot,' he said, his voice trembling. 'We tried our best, but the fire spread so quickly. It was heartbreaking.'
Questions Over Response Time
While the bravery of the locals was commendable, some residents questioned the response time of fire officials. 'The fire brigade took too long to arrive,' said another eyewitness. 'By the time they got here, the building was fully engulfed.' Officials, however, maintained that they responded promptly to the emergency call.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the neighborhood, with many demanding stricter safety regulations for hotels and commercial buildings in the area. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, which is suspected to have originated from an electrical short circuit.
As the community mourns the loss of 21 lives, the heroic efforts of the local residents have been widely praised. 'They are the real heroes,' said a local councilor. 'Without them, the death toll could have been much higher.'
