Patient Discharged After Negative Test Result
A woman from Pala in Kottayam district, who was admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) with suspected Ebola virus infection, has been confirmed negative for the disease. The test results, received from the National Institute of Virology in Pune, ended a three-day health scare for local authorities and the public. The patient was discharged from the hospital following the confirmation.
Travel History and Symptoms
The woman had recently returned from South Sudan, a country in Africa where Ebola outbreaks have occurred. After arriving home, she developed fever and vomiting and initially sought treatment at a private hospital in Pala. Following the intervention of the health department, she was transferred to MCH for specialized care. As Kerala lacks facilities for Ebola diagnosis, her secretion samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for testing.
Precautionary Measures and Medical Board
During her stay at MCH, the patient was kept under observation in an isolation unit. The health department had issued guidelines for travelers arriving from Ebola-affected regions in Africa, advising them to report any fever or symptoms immediately. The woman had traveled from South Sudan to Uganda and then flown to Kochi. A medical board was formed under the leadership of the head of the communicable diseases department to oversee her treatment and manage the situation.
Relief for Health Authorities
The negative test result has brought relief to health officials and the local community. The rapid response and coordination between local hospitals, the state health department, and national laboratories were crucial in handling the potential outbreak. The patient is now recovering at home, and no further cases have been reported.
