Mandeep Singh's Perilous Journey Ends in Tragedy
Mandeep Singh (28), a resident of Muse Wala village in the Guruharsahai sub-division of Ferozepur district, died in the United States on Friday morning after a prolonged illness. He had reached the US via the illegal 'donkey route' nearly a year after leaving his hometown.
To finance his journey in search of better opportunities, Mandeep's family sold their four acres of agricultural land and spent nearly Rs 50 lakh. His father, Gurnam Singh, confirmed the financial sacrifice made by the family.
Journey Through Multiple Countries
According to Gurnam Singh, Mandeep undertook a dangerous route through Thailand, Malaysia, England, France, and the forests of Mexico before finally entering the United States. Upon arrival, US authorities detained him but later allowed him to live and work in a designated city.
Mandeep worked tirelessly to repay the family's debts and improve their financial condition. His father recalled that during phone calls, Mandeep often expressed his desire to arrange grand weddings for his two sisters and provide every comfort to his parents.
Illness and Death
Family members reported that Mandeep had been suffering from cough and fever for nearly three weeks. Medicines were sent to him from the village. Although his condition initially improved, it later deteriorated. He was admitted to a hospital four days before his death and died during treatment on Friday morning.
Gurnam Singh, grieving the loss, said, 'My son was my support during my old age. I had sent him abroad with great hopes but today I am not even able to carry his mortal remains on my shoulders.'
Appeal for Government Assistance
The family has appealed to the Central and Punjab governments to provide all possible assistance in bringing Mandeep's mortal remains back to India at the earliest. They want his last rites to be performed in his native village among his loved ones.
