Four Killed in Head-On Collision with Truck on NH-34

Kanpur: Four individuals, including three members of a single family, lost their lives, and a woman sustained critical injuries after their car collided head-on with a truck on National Highway 34 in the Maudaha Kotwali area of Hamirpur district on Sunday afternoon.

Details of the Incident

The tragic accident occurred around 12:30 pm between Chhirka and Mavaiya villages while the victims were returning from Bageshwar Dham in Madhya Pradesh. The deceased have been identified as Narendra (55), Rajkapur (57), his wife Meena (54), and the driver Ayush Chauhan (25). Narendra's wife, Rekha (52), suffered critical injuries and was referred to Kanpur for advanced medical treatment.

Police confirmed that all victims were members of the same family. The collision left the van completely mangled, causing panic along the highway. Law enforcement personnel reached the spot promptly and, with the assistance of locals, recovered the bodies and sent them for post-mortem examination in Maudaha. Traffic on the national highway remained disrupted for several hours until the damaged vehicles were cleared from the roadway.

Possible Cause of the Accident

Maudaha Kotwali in-charge Santosh Kumar stated that, prima facie, the accident appears to have been caused either due to the driver falling asleep at the wheel or an attempt to overtake another vehicle. Hamirpur Superintendent of Police Mrigank Shekhar Pathak informed that the truck and its driver have been taken into custody, and necessary legal action is being initiated.
