India has condemned the attack on a commercial vessel off the coast of Oman, with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirming that 10 of the 11 Indian nationals on board have been rescued while one remains missing.
Attack on GFS Galaxy
The MEA issued a statement on July 12, 2026, denouncing the attack on the Cyprus-flagged container vessel GFS Galaxy. The vessel was transiting the Strait of Hormuz when it came under fire. According to the MEA, of the 11 Indian nationals aboard, 10 have been rescued so far, and one Indian national is reportedly missing. The Indian Embassy in Oman is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with Omani authorities in the ongoing search and rescue operation. The MEA thanked the Omani authorities for their support.
US Strikes and Regional Tensions
The statement came after the United States launched a third round of strikes against Iran, alleging that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) attacked the vessel. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that a civilian crew member is missing and the vessel is unable to continue its journey due to an onboard fire and significant engine room damage. The attack occurred in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipments.
India's Call for De-escalation
The MEA expressed deep concern over the continuing incidents of attacks on commercial shipping in the region. The statement reiterated India's call for immediate de-escalation of tensions and the conclusion of ongoing negotiations for a diplomatic solution. The MEA emphasized that the targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure must end, and free and unimpeded navigation through international waterways must be restored in accordance with international law.
