The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has reaffirmed its policy on sporting relations with Pakistan, maintaining a blanket ban on bilateral ties while allowing participation in multi-nation events like ICC tournaments, the Olympics, and the Asian Games.
Key Policy Decisions
An office memorandum issued on May 5 stated: "In so far as bilateral sports events in each other's country are concerned, Indian teams will not be participating in competitions in Pakistan. Nor will we permit Pakistani teams to play in India." This policy remains unchanged from the one issued on August 21 last year.
Exemptions for Multi-Nation Events
Regarding international and multilateral events, the memorandum noted that India is guided by the practices of international sports bodies and the interests of Indian sportspersons. It also highlighted India's emergence as a credible venue for hosting international sports events.
Visa Process Simplified
To position India as a preferred destination for hosting global sporting events, the visa process for sportspersons, team officials, technical personnel, and office-bearers of International Sports Governing Bodies has been simplified. The memorandum stated: "In respect of office-bearers of International Sports Governing Bodies, a multi-entry visa shall be granted on priority basis for the duration of their official tenure, subject to a maximum period of five years. This shall facilitate their smooth movement into and within the country, in accordance with international norms."
Context and Background
The policy was introduced last year following controversy over India's participation in the Men's Asia Cup in the UAE, which also featured Pakistan, shortly after the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. With Ahmedabad set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and ambitions to host the Asian Games and Olympics, the government aims to streamline procedures for international sporting events.
