On Friday, the Indian government urged Bangladesh to expedite the verification process for suspected Bangladeshi illegal immigrants to facilitate their deportation. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that a bilateral mechanism exists for handling such cases.

Bilateral Mechanism for Deportation

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal explained that India refers cases to the Bangladeshi side for nationality verification. Once verified, the deportation process moves forward. He noted that India has made several requests to Bangladesh to speed up this process.

Call for Expedited Verification

“We hope and expect that they will be expedited as soon as possible so that the deportation of people who are illegally staying in India can be taken forward in a smooth and efficient manner,” Jaiswal said. He emphasized that for all nationals in India, including those from Bangladesh, there are laws to deal with illegal stay, and they will be dealt with accordingly.
