The mother of a pregnant teenager who, along with her unborn child, was killed in a Range Rover Velar crash in Ohio, United States, has demanded that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deport the Indian man charged in the case. Annette Holmes stated that she does not want 33-year-old Tarsem Singh to remain in the country.
Details of the Incident
According to a Newsweek report cited by NDTV, the victim's family revealed that Singh, an Indian national allegedly living in the US illegally, was the father of 17-year-old Ashlee Holmes' unborn child. Relatives said Ashlee had tried to leave the relationship multiple times but was unsuccessful.
"Nobody should ever deserve to die while pregnant with their first kid," Ashlee's mother told Newsweek. "I'm OK with him being kicked out of the country permanently… I don't want him in the States no more," she added.
The Crash
Reports indicate that Ashlee Holmes was a passenger in a Range Rover Velar that crashed on February 16 after Singh allegedly failed to stop for law enforcement and led deputies on a high-speed chase. The vehicle initially oversped and later reached speeds of over 120 mph during the pursuit. It eventually failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the center line, struck a Jeep, and overturned multiple times. Ashlee was ejected from the vehicle and died of her injuries. Her unborn child also did not survive, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol crash report cited by Newsweek.
Legal Proceedings
Tarsem Singh has been indicted on charges including involuntary manslaughter, reckless homicide, and aggravated vehicular homicide. He is currently in custody on a $1 million bond and is presumed innocent until proven guilty. US authorities stated that Singh entered the country illegally in 2017 and was later released on bond by a judge. ICE has lodged a detainer against him, and deportation proceedings may follow depending on the outcome of the criminal case. A jury trial is scheduled for August 17-21.
