In a swift operation, Uttar Pradesh Police successfully rescued a one-month-old infant who was kidnapped from Raebareli railway station and dismantled a child trafficking chain. The incident, which occurred on May 18, 2026, sparked outrage and a massive search effort.
Kidnapping at Raebareli Station
The infant, identified as Aarav, was kidnapped while his mother, Priya, was waiting for a train at platform number 3 of Raebareli Junction. According to police, a woman approached Priya, offered to help with her luggage, and then snatched the baby before fleeing. The mother's cries alerted nearby passengers, but the kidnapper managed to escape in the crowd.
Police Investigation and Rescue
Upon receiving the complaint, the Government Railway Police (GRP) and local police launched a coordinated investigation. CCTV footage from the station helped identify the suspect, later named as Seema Gupta, a resident of Lucknow. The police tracked her movements and uncovered a child trafficking network operating across multiple states.
Within 48 hours, a team led by Superintendent of Police (Railways) Rajesh Kumar raided a hideout in Lucknow and rescued the infant. The baby was found in good health and reunited with his parents. Seema Gupta was arrested, and two other accomplices were detained for questioning.
Modus Operandi of the Trafficking Ring
Investigations revealed that the gang targeted vulnerable families at railway stations and bus depots. They would befriend parents, particularly mothers traveling alone, and kidnap infants. The children were then sold to childless couples or trafficked for illegal adoption. Police have seized mobile phones and documents that may reveal further links.
Government and Public Response
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath praised the police for their prompt action and assured strict action against all involved. The state government has announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for the rescue team. Child rights activists have called for enhanced security at public transport hubs to prevent such crimes.
The rescued infant is now safe with his family, who expressed gratitude to the police. The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat of child trafficking in India and the importance of vigilance.
