Iran on Wednesday executed a man convicted of collaborating with Israel's Mossad intelligence agency, the judiciary reported, marking the latest in a series of executions amid heightened tensions with Israel and the United States.
Details of the Execution
The judiciary's Mizan Online identified the executed individual as Mehdi Farid, stating he was hanged after being found guilty of "intelligence cooperation and espionage for the Zionist regime" under the capital offense of "corruption on earth." The statement read: "Mehdi Farid... was hanged this morning for extensive cooperation with the terrorist spy service Mossad after the case was examined and the final verdict was approved."
Background and Allegations
According to the report, Farid held a position in a civil defense unit within a sensitive organization and used his access to gather and transmit information to Mossad. His death sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court and carried out after legal procedures were completed. It remains unclear when he was arrested or when the trial took place.
Context of Recent Executions
Iran has conducted multiple executions in recent weeks involving individuals linked by authorities to January protests, which Tehran alleges were instigated by Israel, the United States, and opposition groups, including the banned People's Mujahedin. A ceasefire between Iran, Israel, and the United States has been in effect since April 8 and was extended by US President Donald Trump on Wednesday.
