Iran Hit More US Defence Assets Than Reported, Satellite Images Show

Iranian airstrikes, primarily conducted via drones since February 28, have inflicted far greater damage on US military assets than previously acknowledged, according to a Washington Post analysis of satellite imagery. The strikes have damaged or destroyed at least 228 defence structures or pieces of equipment at US military sites, including hangars, barracks, fuel depots, aircraft, and critical radar, communications, and air defence systems.

Extent of Damage Underreported

The analysis reveals that the destruction of US military assets is significantly higher than earlier reports indicated. However, US Central Command has yet to provide an official assessment of the total military assets damaged in the region. The lack of transparency has raised questions about the scale of the impact.

Missing KC-135 Stratotanker

On Tuesday, a US Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker, a vital aerial refuelling aircraft valued between $40 million and $52 million, vanished from radar over the Strait of Hormuz. Flight tracking data confirmed that the aircraft squawked a 7700 distress signal before its transponder went dark over Qatar. The KC-135 serves as a flying gas station, enabling bombers, fighters, and surveillance planes to extend their operational range. Central Command has remained silent on the missing plane.

Iran's semi-official Fars news agency reported the disappearance, citing data from Flightradar24, but Tehran has not issued a statement claiming involvement.

Aircraft Losses

According to internal tracking by TWZ, a premier defence technology news group, the US lost 39 aircraft during the first week of April, including four F-15E Strike Eagle jets. An additional 10 aircraft were damaged to varying degrees. These losses underscore the effectiveness of Iranian strikes.

Targeted Bases

The Washington Post report highlighted that Iran struck a satellite communication site at al-Udeid airbase in Qatar, as well as Patriot defence equipment at Riffa and Isa airbases in Bahrain and Ali al-Salem airbase in Kuwait. These attacks targeted key infrastructure and defensive systems.
