A private bus carrying 20 factory workers plunged into a canal after colliding with a dumper in Kanpur's Bidhnu area on Thursday morning. All workers sustained injuries and were rescued by locals and police, then admitted to a local health facility.
Accident Details
Police reported that the accident occurred around 8 a.m. when the bus was hit by a speeding dumper. The impact caused the bus to break through the bridge's railings and fall into the Ramganga canal. The bus was transporting workers to a factory in Kanpur Dehat. Due to the low water level in the canal, passengers managed to exit through the windows and climb onto the bus roof to seek help. Police, local residents, and fire brigade teams used ropes and ladders to rescue all passengers.
Eyewitness Account
Ramnaresh, an injured passenger, stated, "A speeding dumper coming from the opposite direction hit the bus and sped away. The bus driver, instead of controlling the bus, jumped off, and thereafter the bus fell into the canal."
Rescue and Investigation
The accident caused traffic jams on the route for several hours. Three cranes were used to lift the bus out of the canal. Bidhnu police station in-charge Tejbahadur Singh confirmed that some workers sustained serious injuries and added that a probe has been initiated into the accident. Authorities are searching for the dumper driver who fled the scene.
