Mira Road Stabbing: ATS Probes Lone Wolf Attack, Recovers IS Note

The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) is conducting a detailed investigation into the life and mindset of Zaib Zubair Ansari, a 31-year-old man arrested for allegedly stabbing two security guards in Mira Road after asking their religion and demanding they recite the Kalma.

Investigation Beyond Routine Assault

The case has moved far beyond a routine assault probe. During a search of Ansari's residence at Smita Regency building in Naya Nagar, investigators uncovered a note referring to the first step and lone wolf attacks, along with references to the Islamic State. This discovery has prompted agencies to treat the matter with heightened seriousness.

Profile of the Accused

According to news agency PTI, Ansari had been living alone at Smita Regency, approximately 200 meters from the attack site. He reportedly lived in the United States with his parents from 2000 to 2020, returning to India after his work permit expired. After returning, he stayed in Kurla, Mumbai, and later in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, before moving to Mira Road in 2022.

Personal Life Under Strain

During questioning, investigators learned that Ansari's wife, an Afghan national, had allegedly left him and gone to America. Officials are examining whether prolonged isolation, personal setbacks, and online exposure may have influenced his behavior.

The Morning of the Attack

On the day of the incident, Ansari first approached two guards posted at an under-construction building and asked for the address of a nearby mosque. When both guards said they did not know, he allegedly asked whether they were Hindus and walked ahead. Moments later, he returned, pulled out a knife, and attacked Subrato Sen and his supervisor Rajkumar Mishra. One victim told police that the accused asked their religion and demanded they recite the Kalma. When they could not, he stabbed them. Rajkumar Mishra was seriously injured.

Disturbing Material Found at Home

During searches, ATS officials recovered a note referring to lone wolf attacks, references to the Islamic State, a laptop, and three copies of the Quran. Investigators are now examining digital evidence and writings to determine whether Ansari was self-radicalized or influenced externally.

Why ATS Stepped In

Given the nature of the attack, the alleged religious targeting, and the recovered material, the Maharashtra government transferred the case to the ATS. Officials believe the incident may be a lone wolf attack carried out by a radicalized individual acting alone.

Arrested Quickly

After the stabbing, CCTV footage helped police identify Ansari, who was arrested within one and a half hours. The Mira Bhayander-Vasai Virar belt, known for its socially mixed population, has seen communal tension in the past, including unrest during the Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha rally in 2024. The investigation now focuses on whether Ansari acted suddenly, planned the assault, or was inspired by extremist ideology.
