16 Feared Trapped in Pune Garbage Mound Collapse

At least 16 people are feared trapped after a massive mound of garbage collapsed onto a three-storey building in Moshi, Pimpri Chinchwad, Pune district, following heavy rain on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. The building was being used as an administrative office by a private company processing waste on behalf of the civic body, according to a senior official. Rescue operations are underway.

Central Government Monitors Situation

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with the chief ministers of Kerala, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Jammu and Kashmir to assess the situation and assured full central assistance. This follows a debris collapse in Kerala's Wayanad, flash floods in Jammu's Doda, and deadly incidents in Maharashtra and Gujarat on Tuesday.

Delhi Waterlogging and Traffic Chaos

In the National Capital, incessant rain left several areas waterlogged, including Sadar Bazar, Nasirpur, Greater Kailash, Badarpur, Teliwara, Mahavir Bazar, Swarup Nagar, and Kushak Road. Pedestrians waded through knee-high water, and long vehicle queues formed on Rohtak Road, with traffic nearly at a standstill between Punjabi Bagh and Shadipur. The ITO intersection also saw congestion. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued 'red' and 'orange' alerts, warning of thunderstorms and more rain with wind speeds up to 40 kmph.

Mumbai and Maharashtra Grapple with Flooding

After a brief respite, heavy rain with thunderstorms returned to Mumbai, delaying suburban trains by 25–30 minutes and causing waterlogging. Tulsi Lake, one of Mumbai's seven drinking water reservoirs, began overflowing late Tuesday night, following Vihar Lake's overflow. The IMD forecast intermittent light to moderate rain in Mumbai and suburbs.

In Maharashtra's Nashik district, the Godavari river swelled due to incessant rain, prompting the administration to urge residents along the Godavari, Kadva, and Girna rivers to move valuables and livestock to safer places as water was discharged from reservoirs like Palkhed and Nandur Madhmeshwar weir. Train services between Neral and Karjat stations in Raigad district were suspended for nearly an hour after the overflowing Ulhas river inundated tracks, said Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway.

Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh Also Affected

Heavy rain disrupted normal life in several Rajasthan districts, with Alwar experiencing inundated markets and roads, and water entering residential colonies. In Himachal Pradesh's Shimla district, flash floods damaged a temporary bridge over the Ganvi khad stream in Rampur subdivision, blocking link roads to Kyao and Kut panchayats. Social media videos showed stranded commuters and locals trying to restore the path.

Political Exchange in Maharashtra Assembly

In the Maharashtra Assembly, Speaker Rahul Narwekar and Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray exchanged remarks over the 'act of God' contention. Thackeray questioned whether there would be a debate on cutting mangroves and forests, asking, 'Will you say this was an act of God?' The opposition demanded an immediate discussion on the rain-related situation.
