A Nepali national was apprehended by security forces near the Indo-Pak border in Punjab while allegedly attempting to cross into Pakistan illegally. The incident occurred late Tuesday evening in the Ferozepur sector, a known sensitive area along the international boundary.
Details of the Arrest
The individual, identified as 32-year-old Rajesh Kumar from Kathmandu, was spotted by Border Security Force (BSF) personnel during routine patrol. According to officials, Kumar was carrying a backpack containing basic necessities and a mobile phone. Preliminary investigations suggest he had been in India for several weeks before heading towards the border.
Interrogation Underway
Kumar has been taken into custody for questioning. Security agencies are probing his motives, including possible links to espionage or human trafficking networks. A senior BSF officer stated, “We are verifying his identity and background. The interrogation is focused on understanding how he reached the border and who assisted him.”
The arrest comes amid heightened vigilance along the border due to recent intelligence inputs about increased cross-border activities. Authorities have tightened surveillance in the region.
Legal Proceedings
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Passport Act. Kumar will be produced before a local court, which will decide on further remand. Meanwhile, the Nepalese embassy has been notified about the detention.
This is not the first instance of a foreign national attempting illegal border crossing in Punjab. In 2023, at least five similar cases were reported, prompting calls for stronger coordination between state and central agencies.
The BSF has urged locals to report any suspicious movements near the border. “Public cooperation is vital in preventing illegal activities and ensuring national security,” the officer added.
