A tragic incident occurred in Rishikesh's Chandreshwar Nagar area on Sunday when a newlywed couple from Delhi was swept away by the strong currents of the Ganga while bathing. The victims were identified as Manish Arya, 30, and Janki, 28, residents of Uttam Nagar in Delhi. Police confirmed that rescue personnel had not yet located them as of late Monday.
Incident Details
According to police, Manish and Janki, who were married on May 4, were visiting Rishikesh. On Sunday, while bathing near the Ganga ghat, Janki began to drift away due to the strong current. Manish attempted to save her but was also swept away. The couple had been living in Delhi for the past few years, originally hailing from Almora. Manish worked at an event management firm in Delhi, while Janki was employed as a content writer in Noida.
Search Operation Underway
Kavindra Sajwan, the local incharge of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), stated, “Our team has been involved in the search operation at Chandreshwar Nagar. It is suspected that the couple went towards the outer area of the river bank to bathe and both were swept away.” The search continues.
Other Drowning Incidents
In the past 48 hours, two more drowning incidents were reported in Rishikesh and Haridwar. In Phool Chatti under Lakshman Jhula police limits, a 30-year-old man drowned on Monday while trying to save his sister. The deceased was identified as Shailendra Mavi from Madhya Pradesh. His sister managed to reach the riverbank and was rescued. In another incident, a youngster named Akash Kumar lost his life in a canal in Haridwar's Jwalapur area on Sunday. Additionally, the SDRF successfully rescued five people from drowning in a separate operation.
