France is confronting another major abuse scandal following the Gisèle Pelicot case, this time involving children in educational institutions across Paris. More than 100 allegations of mistreatment, physical violence, and sexual abuse have surfaced from nurseries, primary schools, and daycare centers, with victims as young as three years old.

The allegations reportedly include cases of sexual assault and rape, as well as physical abuse during lunch breaks, nap times, and after-school activities. Authorities are continuing investigations as scrutiny over child safety in Paris schools intensifies. A 36-year-old defendant, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, is accused of assaulting children while supervising them in bathrooms, during lunch breaks, and in after-school care. He is also accused of sexually harassing two co-workers and sexually assaulting one of them, according to the Associated Press.
Parents Invoke Gisèle Pelicot’s Message
According to lawyers representing some families, parents involved in the case said they were inspired by Gisèle Pelicot’s message that “shame must change sides” from victims to abusers. In France, trials involving minors are generally held behind closed doors. However, activists and parents gathered outside the courthouse demanding broader reforms. Barka Zerouali, co-founder of parents’ group MeToo École (MeToo School), said, “There needs to be a national wake-up call at some point.” Protesters carried banners reading: “Because no child should be afraid to go to school.”
French Panel Adopts Bill Recognising Victims of School Violence
Amid growing concern, Paul Vannier announced that a bill emerging from the “Bétharram” inquiry commission had been widely adopted by the Cultural Affairs and Education Committee. The proposed legislation seeks recognition and compensation for victims of violence in schools, stronger training for students and staff on violence prevention, increased inspections across institutions, and a ban on corporal punishment.
Who Is Gisèle Pelicot?
Gisèle Pelicot is the French woman whose husband was convicted of inviting dozens of men to rape her unconscious body. She was at the centre of the biggest rape trial in French history, which saw her husband jailed for a 20-year term. Talking to the BBC recently, she said, “Rape is a crime and justice has an essential role. It's there to, in fact, name the crimes, to recognise the suffering of victims, and to remember that in fact they must not remain unpunished.” She gave her statement after three teenage boys were spared custodial sentences over the rape of two girls in Hampshire. The girls, then aged 15 and 14, were raped in separate incidents in Fordingbridge in November 2024 and January 2025, by two 14-year-olds. Another boy, then 13, was also convicted for his involvement in the second attack, as per the BBC.
