Political Row in Punjab Over Blasts in Jalandhar and Amritsar

A political battle has erupted in Punjab over back-to-back blasts in Jalandhar and Amritsar, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) criticizing the state government over law and order, while Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann accused the BJP of trying to create unrest “on the pattern of Bengal” to win the 2027 assembly elections.

The BJP turned to Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav’s suggestion of Pakistani spy agency ISI’s involvement to cause disruptions on the anniversary of Operation Sindoor, asserting that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader was making divisive statements. “It is such an insensitive statement,” BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said, highlighting the contradiction between Mann’s allegation and Yadav’s statement. BJP state chief Sunil Jakhar warned that his party would pursue every legal recourse to get “an irresponsible Mann” removed.

As Punjab woke up to news of the blasts, Mann said, “This is BJP’s style of working ... to contest elections, they create riots, carry out small blasts, and divide people...” SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal called for Mann to resign, pointing out that there had been three blasts in 10 days. The political row underscores the heightened tensions in the state ahead of the next elections, with each party trading accusations over the deteriorating security situation.

Background of the Blasts

The explosions occurred in quick succession in the cities of Jalandhar and Amritsar, raising concerns about public safety and the effectiveness of the state’s law enforcement machinery. The first blast took place in a crowded market area, while the second targeted a government building. No casualties were reported, but the incidents have sparked a war of words between the ruling AAP and opposition parties.

Response from Authorities

Punjab Police have launched an investigation, with DGP Gaurav Yadav stating that preliminary evidence points to the involvement of foreign elements, specifically the ISI. However, CM Mann dismissed this claim as a diversionary tactic by the BJP. Meanwhile, the central government has offered assistance, but the state government has yet to respond officially.

The situation remains tense, with both sides digging in their heels. Political analysts believe that the issue will dominate the upcoming session of the Punjab Assembly, where opposition parties are likely to demand a detailed discussion on the law and order situation.
