Russia has launched one of its most intense aerial assaults on Ukraine in recent weeks, claiming to have used hypersonic missiles to strike military-industrial targets across multiple cities. The attacks hit Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Poltava, and Sumy, leaving a trail of destruction.
Casualties and Damage
Ukrainian authorities reported at least 16 civilians killed and more than 100 wounded in the Russian strikes. Residential areas and infrastructure were heavily damaged, with rescue operations ongoing in several locations.
Escalation of Tactics
Vladimir Putin has intensified Moscow's aerial campaign, deploying the powerful hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile for only the third time in the four-year war. This weapon, capable of traveling at speeds exceeding Mach 5, is difficult to intercept and has been used to target high-value military assets.
The attack comes days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that Ukrainian forces had struck 15 Russian oil refineries between January and May this year. These strikes were part of Kyiv's strategy to disrupt Russia's fuel supply and logistics.
International Response
The latest escalation has drawn condemnation from Western allies, who have pledged continued military and humanitarian support to Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russia has warned that any further attacks on its territory will be met with overwhelming force.
As the conflict enters its fifth year, both sides show no signs of de-escalation. The use of hypersonic weapons marks a dangerous new phase in the war, raising concerns about further civilian casualties and regional instability.
