A devastating storm swept through parts of upper Assam on Thursday, resulting in the death of one individual and injuries to several others. The severe weather event caused extensive damage to numerous houses across Tingkhong in Dibrugarh district and Sonari in Charaideo district.
Fatality in Dibrugarh
The sole fatality was reported from the Udaipur area under Tingkhong at approximately 3 am. A large tree, uprooted by the powerful winds, collapsed directly onto the residence of Ajay Garh (28). Garh, who was sleeping inside with his family, died instantly. His two young daughters miraculously survived the incident.
Residents arrived at the scene in the morning and worked to extract the family members from the debris. By the time help reached, Garh was found deceased. A local resident stated, "We rushed to the spot as soon as we learned about it. The house had completely collapsed. It is fortunate that the children survived."
District officials have visited the affected area and are currently assessing the full extent of the storm's damage in and around Tingkhong.
Damage in Charaideo District
In Charaideo district, the storm caused significant destruction in Sonari, where numerous trees were uprooted and several houses were destroyed. At Nafuk Adarshagaon, trees fell on the homes of Numal Mal, Ajit Karmakar, and Chutu Bauri, resulting in structural damage. Ajit Karmakar and his wife Sunita Karmakar sustained injuries. Their nine-year-old daughter, Puspanjali Karmakar, escaped unharmed. The six-member family of Chutu Bauri also had a narrow escape, with no injuries reported.
Assessment and Relief Efforts
No further casualties were reported from Charaideo. Authorities are surveying the affected areas, and relief measures are expected to commence once the damage assessment is complete.
